CULTIGEN

What does the future of sustainable tourism look like in Copenhagen - for visitors and locals?

Background

Copenhageners generally have an excellent relationship with the tourists who visit the city. But it’s far from certain that this will continue, and if you look around at other European cities, you’ll see the opposite picture in many places. The EU-funded CULTIGEN project is tasked with creating an integrated conversation about what the future of city tourism should look like. How do you create that conversation – and perhaps just as importantly: Who should be part of it?

Task

CULTIGEN has three main objectives in focus: To improve inclusive and sustainable tourism development, to spread out tourism in Copenhagen so that more neighborhoods become attractive to visit and can take some of the pressure off the city’s current hotspots, and to increase tourism’s contribution to the Copenhagen economy through sustainable art, culture and leisure products.
We Do Democracy is a partner in the project and is responsible for the citizen collection that will result from the project. In addition, the City of Copenhagen, Aalborg University, the National Museum of Denmark, Wonderful Copenhagen and StoryHunt participate as co-partners in the project.

Solution

The Cultigen project addresses some of the challenges that many European cities face with growing tourism, and instead tries to offer suggestions on how to create a balance between the city’s citizens and the people who visit it.

The project has three main goals:

  1. Create a more open and inclusive tourism management – where both citizens and visitors can actively participate in the development.
  2. Spread tourism to more neighborhoods – so the positive effects reach areas that are often overlooked or receive fewer visitors.
  3. Strengthen the local economy – through new, sustainable cultural, arts and leisure offerings that can create both jobs and local experiences.
