Education for Sustainable Development

The World's Best News invited We Do Democracy to partner in the development of Education for Sustainable Development as a cross-cutting partnership between a wide range of actors in the education sector. The sustainable initiative covers everything from daycare to adult and continuing education - from ABC to PhD. Together, an entire sector sets an ambition to strengthen education in and for sustainable development.

Background

The project stems from the nationwide campaign “Education for the Future”, where 12 youth and student organizations came together with a desire for a stronger sustainability focus across the entire education sector. Against this background, the Minister of Children and Education launched the first phase of Education for Sustainable Development, which the World’s Best News runs as a secretariat with We Do Democracy as a facilitating partner.

Task

In the first phase, Education for Sustainable Development has identified barriers and opportunities across the entire education sector to work with education for sustainable development as an integral part of all children and adults’ education. The results were handed over to the Minister of Children and Education in September 2022. That’s why a wide range of organizations have come together to work on this question over three conferences in 2022 and will build on the results of the development process in the years to come.

Solution

We Do Democracy was responsible for designing and facilitating the work of the partnerships at the three conferences in 2022. Here, We Do Democracy facilitated a kick-off conference where the partnerships met and created a shared vision and plan for their work. Next, a mid-term conference where the barriers and opportunities identified by the partnerships were tested with spokespersons from the parliamentary parties. Finally, the partnerships’ contributions were compiled into a joint set of recommendations that were handed over to the Minister in September 2022.

Results

  • Establish a historic cross-sector collaboration in education, taking a major joint step towards a sustainable education sector.
  • Provide an overview and insight into the existing strengths and opportunities in sustainability that the education sector already has, as well as the barriers that hinder education for sustainable development today.
  • Present joint recommendations to the Minister of Children and Education to strengthen education for sustainable development in the future.
