Friendly Housing Plus

As cities grow, the pressure to create smaller, smarter and better housing is increasing. How do we create affordable housing that invites active communities, participation and democratic education? We Do Democracy has helped initiate Venligbolig Plus.

Background

Mico-Living as a form of housing is crucial in a time when cities are growing and available space in the city is scarce. Venligbolig Plus is a possible solution to the problem, as it shows that it is possible to create space, diversity and inclusive communities close to the city center.

Task

Venligbolig began as an activist idea that allowed Danes to invite refugees into their backyard. Now, Venligbolig Plus in Frederiksberg will invite students and refugees into modern, compact shared housing for DKK 2,500 per month in the middle of the city. The students and refugees live together and are part of an everyday collective where the focus is on supporting integration, friendships and shared democratic education. In 2019, 74 young students and refugees moved into the newly established Venligbolig Plus branch on Roskildevej 54 in Frederiksberg.

Solution

The collaboration is between Frederiksberg Forenede Boligselskaber, Frederiksberg Municipality and Venligbolig. The integration concept is based on the specific Venligbolig Plus project, but can also be used in other existing or new housing projects that target citizens across social, cultural and economic divides. Venligbolig Plus in Frederiksberg consists of three newly constructed properties with a total of 37 apartments of 33 square meters. Two people live together in a shared apartment, where each resident has their own room, but otherwise shares a kitchen and bathroom with their roommate. There are also common rooms and roof terraces on the top floor for shared use.
