On January 16, 40,000 Copenhageners received an invitation to participate in the Citizens’ Assembly on Future Tourism. The Citizens’ Assembly is an important tool in the work to promote citizens’ perspectives in the development of tourism in Copenhagen.
The task of the Citizens’ Assembly
The number of tourists in Copenhagen is expected to increase in the future, and this can bring both opportunities and challenges. It can create opportunities for economic growth, development of transportation options and a vibrant cultural life. It can also create challenges through pressure on the city’s infrastructure, environment and development. We need to have a conversation with the city’s citizens about how tourism can contribute to the positive development of the city, so we can welcome visitors and contribute to what makes Copenhagen a great place to live. That’s why we need the input of Copenhageners to answer the question:
“What will tourism look like in 2030 if it is to contribute to making Copenhagen a better place to live and visit, while promoting the green transition, positive encounters and residents’ interests?”
Citizens across the City of Copenhagen have been invited to participate in the draw to be selected to participate in the Citizens’ Assembly and hand over their recommendations to the City of Copenhagen and Wonderful Copenhagen, who have committed to work with the recommendations. The Citizens’ Assembly is part of the EU project CULTIGEN, which is about the sustainable development of tourism.
What is a citizen assembly?
A citizens’ assembly is a democratic form of participation where a group of citizens, reflecting the city’s population, work together in a series of meetings. Members of a citizens’ assembly gain access to knowledge and facts and listen to other citizens with the aim of creating recommendations for the city’s shared solutions.
