In Denmark, we pride ourselves on our high voter turnout. Yet we see a clear democratic imbalance in voter turnout: In the last municipal elections, only 29% of ethnic minority Danes voted – a sign that our democracy is far from being inclusive and accessible to all.
This afternoon we ask the question: How can we work together to create a democracy that feels relevant and representative for everyone – and where all voices are heard and weighted equally?
The conversation has only become more urgent in 2025, where the rhetoric about minority ethnic Danes has become harsher, and proposals to restrict the right to vote are back in the debate. It calls for us to stand together for a democracy for all citizens of society.
In a panel discussion, we invite civil society actors and politicians to share their perspectives on what stands in the way of democratic participation – and how we together pave the road to an inclusive democracy with wider participation?
Together we look for hope and action for a better democratic future for all citizens – because the democratic party is best when everyone is involved.
The event is part of the Network for Democratic Representation’s initiative “An election for all”, which focuses on underrepresented groups in democracy: young people, gender and sexual minorities, ethnic minority Danes, people with disabilities and the socially vulnerable.
